At the last meeting we discussed starting self defense workshops to counter street violence and violent hate crimes. I tried to get in contact with the martial arts teacher who I thought would be interested, but to no avail. Thus if people are serious about this we should start looking for new people who'd be willing to teach a workshop like this.
Things we need to discuss and figure out:
- What are the goals of a workshop like this?
- Where can we do this?
- How often / how many times should we do this?
- How open to the public should a workshop like this be?
- Who is going to be able to teach something like this?
- When should we do this?
I think this is a project that would be very beneficial to queer and trans youth, to anyone at higher risks of violent attack and crime, and to anyone who may someday find themselves in confrontation with authority or would-be hate criminals. At the meeting it was also mentioned that ABC could co-sponsor this event.
